A public street is the city's problem
A vehicle abandoned on a public street in Chicago is handled by the city — report it to 311. Do not arrange a private tow off public property.
Private property gives you options and responsibility
A car on your lot, in your garage or on your driveway is different. You generally cannot simply sell a vehicle that is not yours, but there are legitimate routes for one that has been left behind.
Document before anything else
Photograph the vehicle, the VIN, the plate and where it sits, with dates. Keep the lease, any notice served and any correspondence. That is what protects you later.
Say so on the first call
Tell the buyer the car is not in your name. We would far rather know at the start than have a driver find out at your gate. Being straight about it usually reveals a workable path.
Different rules across the line
If the property is in Indiana rather than Illinois, the process differs. Mention which state you are in.
